Vyshyvanka is our cultural code: an interview with Victoria Apanasenko

At the beginning of the year, the whole country was watching Victoria Apanasenko - Miss Ukraine Universe 2022, who represented Ukraine at the "Miss Universe" competition and used this international platform to tell the world about the war that Russia started in our Motherland. One of her tools for popularizing Ukraine was fashion diplomacy — all the clothes for the girl were prepared by local designers. On Vyshyvanka Day, together with Vogue UA, we talked with Victoria about the importance of clothes in shaping the country's cultural code and her favorite Vyshyvankas.

Victoria diligently prepared to participate in the "Miss Universe" competition, understanding the responsibility of representing Ukraine in such a difficult time. A country that today attracts the attention of the whole world and that demonstrates incredible courage in the fight for freedom and independence. It was very important for the girl to hire Ukrainian designers in order to show the talent and strength of our craftsmen and the fact that even in the most difficult times they are able to create beautiful things.

"I very clearly understand how important it is for Ukrainians to demonstrate their authenticity, because our culture is unique. For example, a Ukrainian embroiderer today has become part of the business wardrobe and she tells without words who we are and where we are from. By the way, our national costume for the competition contained elements of embroidery."

Today, on Vyshyvanka Day, millions of Ukrainians will wear their embroidered shirts, post a photo on Instagram and share with the world a piece of their DNA, their light and goodness, and I want to remind you that the world will be saved by people - warriors of light. Their weapons are not cartridges, rockets or artillery. Their strength is action, help, altruism and love for one's neighbor. Brave, determined and strong in spirit! I am sure that each of us has this light of goodness that can change this world for the better!
